Lumail vs EmailOctopus: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?

EmailOctopus is cheap, list-priced, and dashboard-only. Lumail bills by emails sent and adds transactional email, graph workflows, and agent access.

Lumail vs EmailOctopus: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
In this guide

EmailOctopus is a simple, low-cost email marketing tool priced by list size; Lumail is an email platform priced by emails sent, with transactional email and AI-agent access built in. Both handle campaigns, automations, and signup forms. EmailOctopus keeps everything in its dashboard. Lumail lets agents and code operate the same account.

EmailOctopus is deliberately email-only: no SMS, no CRM, and one of the most generous free plans in the category. Lumail is built for teams whose email work runs through assistants, terminals, and product code as much as through a visual editor. EmailOctopus facts here come from its official pricing page as of August 2026; plans change, so check before you buy. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email

EmailOctopus offers a REST API for lists, contacts, tags, and campaign reports, plus webhooks and Zapier. It has no official MCP server, CLI, or SDK, and its API cannot send email: every campaign is built and sent in the dashboard.

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending. The same operations run in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, and through a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. Every tool is scoped to your organization, so an agent works on your real audience.

In practice you can ask an assistant to:

  • draft next week's campaign from a brief and your existing template;
  • tag and segment subscribers before a targeted send;
  • build a workflow graph and test it against sample subscribers;
  • summarize last month's results without exporting a CSV.

Choose Lumail if your product also needs password resets and receipts, or if you store a large list but email only part of it at a time.

Choose EmailOctopus if you want the cheapest simple tool

EmailOctopus does a small set of things well and charges little for it. That is a legitimate choice, not a missing feature.

Choose EmailOctopus if:

  • a free plan of 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails a month covers you;
  • you want plain campaigns, forms, and landing pages without SMS or a suite;
  • you already run Amazon SES and want EmailOctopus Connect, which sends through your own AWS account.

Lumail does not try to beat EmailOctopus on simplicity. Its focus is the programmable system around email: audiences, workflows, delivery, and agent access.

Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices

EmailOctopus charges by how many subscribed contacts you store, and each tier caps monthly sends at roughly 10 times the list. Unsubscribed and bounced contacts do not count, but the same address on two lists counts twice. Growing past a tier upgrades you automatically; sending past the cap requires a manual upgrade. Nonprofits get 20% off.

A few reference points from EmailOctopus's published monthly Pro prices:

  • 2,500 subscribers: $20 a month, 25,000 emails;
  • 10,000 subscribers: $44.50 a month, 100,000 emails;
  • 20,000 subscribers: $78 a month, 200,000 emails.

Lumail charges by emails sent and never by stored subscribers:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

A worked example

Say you have 20,000 subscribers and send two campaigns a month to the full list, so 40,000 emails.

On Lumail, that is Premium: $20 a month, since all 40,000 emails are included.

On EmailOctopus, 20,000 subscribers costs $78 a month on Pro, and you would use a fifth of the 200,000-email cap.

Now flip it. Say you have 2,000 subscribers and send them four emails a month, so 8,000 emails. EmailOctopus is free, because you are under 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails. Lumail is $20 on Premium, because 8,000 is above the 3,000-email free tier.

That is the honest shape: EmailOctopus wins for small lists emailed often, Lumail wins once the list grows faster than your sending.

Compare automation and transactional email

EmailOctopus automations use a tree view with templates. Triggers include a contact joining a list, a field or tag changing, a date or anniversary, or an API call. Steps cover sending an email, waiting, branching on a condition, and updating tags or fields. The free plan allows three automations of up to five steps each; Pro allows more automations and up to three triggers on one.

Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan. It supports subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; and goals and exit rules. Agents can read and edit the same graphs through MCP, the CLI, the SDK, and the API.

Transactional email is the biggest gap. Hosted EmailOctopus has no SMTP relay and no send API, so password resets and receipts need a separate provider. Lumail sends transactional email through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, in the same organization and on the same domain as your campaigns.

Migrating from EmailOctopus to Lumail

  1. Export contacts with their status. Export subscribed contacts with fields and tags, plus unsubscribed and bounced contacts, so they are suppressed in Lumail from day one.
  2. Authenticate your sending domain. Set up SPF and DKIM in Lumail and verify the domain while EmailOctopus keeps running.
  3. Rebuild automations as graphs. EmailOctopus automations do not export as runnable workflows, so recreate each tree in Lumail and test it with a few addresses.
  4. Replace forms and landing pages. Recreate hosted landing pages and embedded forms as Lumail capture pages, then update your site links.
  5. Move transactional sending last. If you added a separate provider for app email, switch it to Lumail's API or SMTP once campaigns are stable.
