Lumail vs Klaviyo: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?

Klaviyo bills by active profiles and pairs email with SMS for stores. Lumail bills by emails sent, stores unlimited subscribers, and lets agents run it.

Lumail vs Klaviyo: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
In this guide

Klaviyo is an ecommerce CRM that prices by active profiles and pairs email with SMS, WhatsApp, and push for online stores; Lumail is an email platform that prices by emails sent and is built so AI agents and developers can operate it. Both run campaigns and automations. Klaviyo's center is store data. Lumail's center is email as a programmable system.

That makes this less a feature race than a question of what you sell and who does the work. A Shopify brand that lives on cart flows and text messages has different needs from a team that stores a large list, emails part of it, and wants agents doing the operational work. Klaviyo facts here come from its official pricing page and help center as of August 2026; plans change, so check before you buy. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email

Klaviyo has a real agent story. It offers in-app AI agents, a remote MCP server with a Claude connector and a ChatGPT app, and REST SDKs in Python, PHP, Ruby, and Node. Its own help center says the ChatGPT app reports on campaigns and flows and drafts content, but cannot send campaigns, edit flows, or change segments and lists. There is no official CLI.

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending. The same operations run in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, and through a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. An agent works on your real audience and real workflow state.

In practice you can ask an assistant to:

  • build or edit a workflow graph, not only draft copy;
  • tag and segment subscribers before a targeted send;
  • trace why a subscriber took a specific branch;
  • send a receipt or password reset from the same account;
  • summarize last month's results without exporting a CSV.

You keep consequential actions behind human approval and finish drafts in the visual editor. The point is removing the clicking around the work, not the judgment.

Choose Lumail if you store a large list and email only part of it, if your product needs transactional email next to its marketing, or if you want agents to change workflows rather than just read reports.

Choose Klaviyo if your store runs on commerce data and SMS

Klaviyo is built for online stores, and it does that job well. Its profiles pull in orders, products, and browsing from 350+ integrations, so a flow can react to a price drop or a placed order without custom code.

Choose Klaviyo if:

  • you sell on Shopify or a similar platform and want abandoned-cart, post-purchase, and catalog flows ready to go;
  • you need SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, or push in the same automation as email;
  • you want sign-up forms, landing pages, revenue attribution, and optional helpdesk and analytics add-ons in one CRM.

Lumail does not try to be a commerce CRM. It has no SMS, no product catalog sync, and no revenue attribution. Its focus is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.

Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices

Klaviyo prices by active profiles, meaning everyone still eligible to receive marketing. Your plan must cover that count, and Klaviyo upgrades you at the next billing cycle if it does not. Paid email plans allow sends up to 10 times the profile cap, so a 500-profile plan covers 5,000 emails. The free plan stops sending once you pass 250 profiles or 500 emails. SMS and WhatsApp are bought separately, and prices above the entry tier come from a calculator, not a published table.

Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

A worked example

Say you have 5,000 subscribers and send ten emails to each of them in a month, between campaigns and flows. That is 50,000 emails.

On Lumail, that is Premium: $20 for the first 40,000 emails, plus 10,000 at $0.60 per 1,000, so $26 for the month.

Klaviyo's help center uses almost exactly this shape as a billing example: a $100/month plan covering 5,000 profiles and 50,000 emails. It is an illustration, not a rate card, so confirm it in the calculator. Now let the list grow to 20,000 subscribers while you keep mailing about the same 50,000 emails. Lumail stays at $26. Klaviyo moves to a larger profile tier, because profiles, not sends, set the plan.

The general shape: profile-based pricing charges you for the size of your audience, send-based pricing charges you for contacting it. If SMS is central to your revenue, Klaviyo's bundle may still be worth more than the email line suggests.

Compare automation and transactional email

Klaviyo's flows are strong for commerce. Triggers include list joins, segment changes, events like a placed order, dates, and price drops. A split can branch up to 20 ways, and one flow can mix email, SMS, and push. Flows AI can draft a flow from a description on paid accounts.

Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan, including Free. It supports subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; and goals and exit rules. The same graph is readable and editable from the app, MCP, CLI, SDK, and API.

Transactional email is the sharper split. Klaviyo has no SMTP relay or direct send API. On paid plans, you mark a flow email as transactional, Klaviyo reviews it within about one business day, and editing the content later sends it back for approval. Lumail sends transactional messages from the same organization through the API or SMTP relay at smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, with no approval queue.

Migrating from Klaviyo to Lumail

Prove the new system on email before touching anything tied to your store.

  1. Export profiles and suppressions. Export email-consented profiles along with unsubscribed and suppressed ones. Import the suppressions too; they protect deliverability and compliance.
  2. Authenticate your sending domain. Configure SPF and DKIM in Lumail and verify the domain. Keep Klaviyo live while DNS propagates.
  3. Rebuild one email-only flow. Recreate your welcome series as a graph workflow, then test success, unsubscribe, and early-exit paths with test subscribers.
  4. Move transactional email. Point receipts and account email at the Lumail API or SMTP relay, and confirm delivery before switching off the Klaviyo flow.
  5. Decide what stays. SMS, WhatsApp, and catalog-driven cart flows have no Lumail equivalent. Keep them on a commerce tool or retire them deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lumail a Klaviyo alternative?

Yes, for email campaigns, automations, transactional email, and agent access. If you depend on SMS, WhatsApp, push, or store catalog data, Klaviyo remains the better fit.

Is Lumail cheaper than Klaviyo?

Usually, for a large list you email selectively, because Lumail does not charge for stored subscribers. Both paid plans start at $20/month, but Klaviyo's price climbs with active profiles while Lumail's follows sends.

What is the main difference between Lumail and Klaviyo?

Klaviyo is an ecommerce CRM for email, SMS, and push, billed by active profiles. Lumail is an email platform billed by volume, with graph workflows, built-in transactional email, and 89 MCP tools agents can operate.

Can I migrate from Klaviyo to Lumail?

Yes. Export profiles and suppressions, authenticate your domain, rebuild email flows as graph workflows, and move transactional email to the API or SMTP. SMS and catalog flows do not carry over.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Klaviyo if you run an online store and want email, SMS, and store data in one CRM, with cart and post-purchase flows ready to go. Paying by active profiles is the price of that depth.

Choose Lumail if email is a system you operate: agents working through 89 MCP tools, graph workflows on every plan, transactional email in the same account, and a bill that follows what you send rather than who you store.
