Lumail vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Salesforce Marketing Cloud starts at $1,500 per org per month, billed annually. Lumail is self-serve email from $0 with 89 MCP tools. Compare the fit.

In this guide
Salesforce Marketing Cloud, now sold as Agentforce Marketing, is an enterprise marketing suite on the Salesforce platform, licensed annually from $1,500 per org per month; Lumail is a self-serve email platform billed by emails sent, with unlimited subscribers and 89 MCP tools so AI agents can operate it.
This is less a feature comparison than a question of what you are buying. Salesforce sells CRM-connected marketing across email, SMS, WhatsApp, and push, with data and AI products around it. Lumail sells email: campaigns, workflows, and transactional sending, with published prices and no contract. Salesforce facts in this comparison come from its official pricing page as of August 2026; verify current terms before purchasing, because plans change. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email
Salesforce has put AI at the center of its marketing suite. Agentforce can assemble campaigns, Einstein handles send-time optimization and scoring, and Marketing Cloud Engagement has an MCP server that lets Claude Code or Gemini CLI work with journeys, automations, content, data, email, and SMS. Salesforce does not publish a tool count for it, and it is not documented for the newer Marketing Cloud Next product.
Lumail's 89 organization-scoped MCP tools come with every plan, including the free one. They cover campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending, and the same operations run in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, and through a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. No implementation partner or admin setup is needed.
In practice that means you can ask an assistant to:
- draft next week's newsletter from an approved brief and send a test;
- segment subscribers by tag or engagement before a targeted send;
- build a welcome workflow with waits and condition branches;
- read a workflow run and explain why a subscriber took a specific branch;
- summarize last month's campaign results without exporting a CSV.
Consequential actions stay behind human approval, and drafts finish in the visual editor.

The second difference is commitment. Salesforce contracts are annual and sales-quoted. Lumail is month to month, starts free, and moves between plans as your volume changes.
Choose Salesforce Marketing Cloud if marketing runs on Salesforce
If your company lives in Salesforce, Marketing Cloud's value is the connection. Journeys hand off to sales and service, data flows through Data 360, and one vendor covers email, SMS, WhatsApp, and mobile push. Add-ons cover personalization, loyalty, and marketing intelligence. The scale is real too: Engagement+ editions include email allowances measured in millions of messages.
Choose Salesforce Marketing Cloud if:
- marketing must live on Salesforce CRM, with journeys that hand off to sales and service;
- you need SMS, WhatsApp, push, customer data, personalization, loyalty, or B2B lead scoring from one vendor;
- you already run Engagement or Account Engagement and want to add Agentforce without replacing it.
Lumail does not replace a CRM, a customer data platform, or SMS. It is the email layer: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, delivery, and programmable access for agents and code.
Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices
Salesforce sells annual org licenses. Marketing Cloud Next starts at $1,500 per org per month on Growth and $3,250 on Advanced, billed annually, and the pricing page does not publish the email and contact allowances for those two editions. The Engagement+ editions do publish them: Pro+ is $2,000 per month with 2.5 million emails and 15,000 contacts, and Corporate+ is $5,500 with 10 million emails and 45,000 contacts. Premier Success support adds 30% of net license fees, and implementation is quoted separately.
Lumail publishes monthly prices, with unlimited subscribers on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
A worked example
Say you have 40,000 subscribers and send them ten emails a month between newsletters and lifecycle sequences, so 400,000 emails.
On Lumail, that is exactly the Business plan: $200 a month, or $2,400 a year, with the 40,000 subscribers stored at no extra cost.
On Salesforce, the entry point is Marketing Cloud Next Growth at $1,500 per month billed annually, or $18,000 a year, and its email and contact allowances are not public. On Engagement+, Pro+ includes only 15,000 contacts, so a 40,000-person list points to Corporate+ at $5,500 a month, which is $66,000 a year before Premier Success and implementation.
Those Salesforce contracts buy far more than email. If you need that stack, the comparison is not close in Lumail's favor on scope. If you only need email, it is not close on cost.
Compare automation and transactional email
Salesforce has three automation stacks. Marketing Cloud Next uses Salesforce Flow for multi-channel journeys and Agentforce for campaign creation. Engagement uses Journey Builder and Automation Studio. Account Engagement, the B2B line, uses engagement programs and automation rules capped at 50 to 150 depending on edition. Which one you use depends on which product you buy.
Lumail has one workflow engine, graph-based and included on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. It is email only, and every workflow is readable and editable from the app, MCP tools, CLI, SDK, and API.
For transactional email, Marketing Cloud Engagement offers a Transactional Messaging API for order confirmations and password resets, and journeys can send triggered messages. There is no self-serve SMTP, and transactional options for Marketing Cloud Next are not publicly listed. Lumail sends transactional email through the REST API or the SMTP relay at smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, from the same organization as your campaigns.
Migrating from Salesforce Marketing Cloud to Lumail
Move the email that does not depend on the rest of the Salesforce stack.
- Decide the scope. List which journeys are email only. Anything that relies on CRM handoffs, SMS, WhatsApp, or Data 360 stays in Salesforce.
- Export subscribers and unsubscribes. Work with your Salesforce admin to export subscribers, their unsubscribe status, and the data your sends rely on, then import both active and unsubscribed contacts into Lumail.
- Authenticate your sending domain. Add SPF and DKIM for Lumail and verify the domain before the first send.
- Rebuild email journeys as workflows. Recreate each email-only journey as a Lumail graph workflow and test the success and exit paths with test subscribers.
- Move transactional email and connect your agent. Point order confirmations and password resets at Lumail's API or
smtp.lumail.io:587, then connect Lumail's MCP tools to your assistant and hand it one real task.
