SparkPost, now Bird Email, is high-volume sending infrastructure. Lumail runs newsletters, graph workflows, and transactional email that AI agents operate.

Lumail vs SparkPost: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
In this guide

SparkPost is high-volume email sending infrastructure, an API and SMTP relay with deliverability analytics, and it now lives on as Bird Email after MessageBird acquired it in 2021 and rebranded in 2023. Lumail is an email platform: newsletters, subscribers, graph workflows, and transactional email in one organization that AI agents can operate.

SparkPost's pricing page now redirects to Bird, and existing SparkPost customers are already on the Bird network. The engine is the same one that built SparkPost's deliverability reputation. The question is whether you need that engine on its own, or a platform that also runs the newsletter and lifecycle email on top. SparkPost facts in this comparison come from its official pricing page as of August 2026. For the compact version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Choose Lumail if AI agents should operate your email

Bird has invested in agent tooling. It offers a hosted MCP server, a local one, a CLI, and skills for coding assistants, and ChatGPT can connect as a developer-mode connector. Those tools cover sending, templates, suppressions, sending domains, and dedicated IPs. They do not cover subscribers, campaigns, or workflows, because the sending product does not have them.

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools covering campaigns, subscribers, tags, segments, workflows, templates, analytics, and transactional sending. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor, alongside a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API. Every tool is scoped to your organization, so an agent works with your real audience and real campaign state.

In practice, you can ask an assistant to:

  • draft next week's newsletter from a brief and your existing template;
  • segment subscribers by tag or engagement before a targeted send;
  • read a workflow graph and explain why a subscriber took a branch;
  • send a transactional test and check its delivery;
  • summarize last month's campaign results without exporting a CSV.

Sending and scheduling stay behind human approval. The difference is that the agent operates the email program, not only the pipe it runs through.

Choose SparkPost if deliverability at scale is the product

SparkPost's heritage is deliverability. Bird says the engine carries about 40% of commercial email, and even the Starter plan includes Signals predictive analytics, health scores, spam-trap monitoring, and real-time alerts. It runs in both US and EU regions.

It also covers infrastructure Lumail does not. The Premier plan, at $75/month on the default 50,000-email tier, includes a dedicated IP with automated warmup, inbound email webhooks, A/B testing, and up to 15 subaccounts. Lumail has no inbound email routing and does not sell dedicated IPs.

Choose SparkPost if:

  • high-volume sending is the product you are buying, and you want deep deliverability analytics;
  • you need dedicated IPs, subaccounts, or inbound email webhooks;
  • you already send on SparkPost and want to keep that reputation while adding Bird's SMS or WhatsApp.

Compare the pricing models, not the starting prices

Both products charge by volume rather than by subscriber, so the useful comparison is what each price includes.

SparkPost prices by picking a monthly volume tier, from 50,000 up to 5 million emails and beyond. On the default 50,000 tier, Starter costs $20/month and Premier costs $75/month. Enterprise is custom pricing for more than 5 million emails a month. Overage rates are not shown on the default plan cards.

Lumail prices on emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20/month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200/month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

A worked example

Say you send 50,000 emails a month, a weekly newsletter to about 12,500 subscribers.

On SparkPost Starter, that is $20 for the 50,000 tier. On Lumail Premium, it is $20 for the first 40,000 emails plus 10,000 × $0.60 per 1,000, so $26.

For raw sending, SparkPost is cheaper here, and that is the honest result. What the $20 does not include is a campaign editor, a subscriber database, or automation; you build or buy those elsewhere. If you need dedicated IPs or A/B tests, SparkPost Premier is $75 at the same volume. Compare the total cost of the email program, not only the sending line.

Compare automation and transactional email

SparkPost has no journey or workflow builder. You send from your application with stored templates and webhooks, and Premier adds scheduled sending and A/B testing. Bird sells a separate marketing platform with journeys, but that is a different product from the SparkPost sending service.

Lumail's workflow engine is graph-based and included on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. The same workflows are readable from the app, MCP tools, CLI, SDK, and API.

Transactional email is SparkPost's core product, sent through its REST API or SMTP relay. One thing to check: Bird's newer Email API is HTTP-only, and Bird says it does not offer a customer SMTP relay there, while the older SparkPost SMTP relay is still documented. Lumail sends transactional email through its REST API or SMTP relay at smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, in the same organization as your newsletters.

Migrating from SparkPost to Lumail

SparkPost holds your suppression list; your subscriber list may live in your app.

  1. Export recipients and suppressions. Export your recipient lists and SparkPost's suppression list. SparkPost's own onboarding treats importing suppressions as mandatory, and the same logic applies when leaving.
  2. Authenticate your sending domain. Set up SPF and DKIM in Lumail and verify the domain. Keep SparkPost live while DNS propagates.
  3. Rebuild one sequence as a workflow. Recreate your onboarding or scheduled sends as a graph, then test with a few subscribers.
  4. Decide where app email lives. Point transactional sends at Lumail's API or SMTP, or keep SparkPost for peak app volume and move only the newsletter.
  5. Send one campaign and connect your agents. Send to a consented segment, check rendering and links, then run one real task through MCP.
